Oleksandr Smahlyi - Modern Artist
Oleksandr Smahlyi was born in Ukraine, on March 18, 1969, to the renowned family of sculptors. Oleksandr’s initial passion for art is inseparably linked with his grandfather Fyodor Grigorievich Zaytsev, Honorable Artist and Sculptor of the USSR, who Oleksandr rightfully considers being his first art mentor. Spending numerous hours in his workshop, Oleksandr has gradually learned the wide world of art in practice rather than theory, directly from its origins and onward towards the emergence of a masterpiece. Oleksandr’s grandfather recognized his gift for arts and recommended him to get educated at art school.
Art became Oleksandr’s passion in 1983 and he graduated from the Art School with distinction. The works of Oleksandr Smahlyi boasted their remarkable commonality with nature and reminded photos which occasioned delight amongst surrounding public therewith. At that point, he was yet to realize that he was creating his works in a recently coming into being art movement of Hyperrealism. In 1988, the author takes on the position of illustrator at the Book Factory. Experiencing a growing need in self-improvement, Oleksandr is fascinated with photography. Since 2000, he works as a photographer and conducts photoshoots at Ukraine-wide Beauty Pageants for fashion magazines and international activities.
Henceforth, the realization kicks in as the professional photography can be a great base for the creation of the painting, thus primarily allowing him to fine-tune the drawing by lighting on the picture; and then, embody that on the canvas to meticulous detail. Incrementally, the distinctions between the photograph and the painting are being erased, which resulted in the choice of hyperrealism as Oleksandr’s primary art movement. Being inspired by masterpieces of notable artisans, visiting museums and closely studying his favourite artists, Oleksandr Smahlyi is capable of creating exact replicas by the means of pastels, coloured pencils, namely he is able to make virtually any painting by attending to each tiny little detail. In 2016 he meets Anna who later on becomes his muse. Since then, he feels how his creativity is fully blooming like a magical flower which leads him to pursue Botanical Illustration. Author’s works are unveiled in various galleries on a regular basis. Paintings are in private collections around Europe and North America. Since 2016 he has actively participated in international online contests. He staged three personal exhibitions in his home country and one in Germany. He took part in art presentations in neighbouring countries to Ukraine. He is a present member of the Botanical Artists Association of Russia, Great Britain, the United States, and Canada.
